In our previous post, we introduced optical films, which can help filter or improve light. And the electric chemicals in the optical films are the main material that does the work. Different chemicals will have other functions on the optical films. In this post, we will introduce reactive mesogens.

What are the reactive mesogens?

Well, the mesogens, usually short as RM, it is polymerizable liquid crystals. And the liquid crystal molecules could be “frozen” during the polymerization process to form polymers with optical birefringence.  

Reactive mesomorphic polymers can form a rigid network with porous structure, surround CLC molecules as “shells,” and retain the microcavity structure. The reflected light from the one-dimensional microcavity film can be switched between the scattered state and the reflected state through the dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystal driving layer.

What chemicals do the reactive mesogens have?

What are the main applications of reactive mesogens?

Well, the main purpose of the mesogens is to improve the image quality of the. This can improve the image quality of liquid crystal displays (LCD) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) presentations. Usually, it can be coated and processed on glass or other film machine boards to produce extremely thin films on rigid or flexible substrates. 

What optical films does it apply to?

The common optical film of the mesogens in the alignment optical film for the LCD. The characteristic of the alignment optical film is good light penetration. And it must be ionized or partially ionized; have covalent or partially covalent links; amorphous, and good lattice structure. The main materials are DLC、SiC、SiO2、glass、Si3N4、Al2O3、CeO2、ZnTiO2.

Another application of the reactive mesogens in the UV optical films. 3D available movies are very popular in recent years, and 3D glasses have become common and hot selling. And now the market demand is increasing for it.
