Application |
1. Phenylsilyl protection / silylating reagent: Introduces the dimethylphenylsilyl (PhMe₂Si–) group onto alcohols, silanols and other active-hydrogen sites; the phenyl group makes the silyl group more lipophilic and UV-traceable and alters deprotection selectivity vs. plain TMS. |

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q.What is dimethylaminodimethylphenylsilane?
A. It is a phenyl-substituted monoamino silane with the linear formula C₆H₅Si(CH₃)₂N(CH₃)₂ (CAS 20180-31-8, molecular formula C₁₀H₁₇NSi, MW 179.34; registered name N,N,1,1-tetramethyl-1-phenylsilanamine). The silicon center carries one dimethylamino leaving group, two methyls and one phenyl group.
Q.What is it mainly used for?
A. It is used as a dimethylphenylsilyl (PhMe₂Si–) transfer/protecting reagent for alcohols and silanols in organic synthesis, as a phenyl-functional intermediate for phenyl silicone oils/resins and Si–N-based chemistry, and for grafting hydrophobic phenylsilyl groups onto oxide surfaces. The phenyl group brings higher refractive index, lipophilicity and thermal stability than plain trimethylsilyl groups.
Q.How is it made?
A. The standard route is aminolysis of dimethylphenylsilyl chloride (phenyldimethylchlorosilane, CAS 768-33-2) with dimethylamine under anhydrous, basic conditions. This defined synthetic origin supports consistent structure and purity of our batches.
Q.How does a dimethylphenylsilyl group differ from a TMS group?
A. The phenyl group makes the silyl moiety more lipophilic and gives the derivative higher refractive index and better thermal/UV characteristics; dimethylphenylsilyl ethers are also more hydrophobic and can be cleaved under different (often fluoride-based or selective) conditions than TMS ethers. Customers choose it when TMS protection is too labile or when a phenyl-modified silicone segment is desired.
Q. What purity do you supply?
A. Our standard grade is 95% min (by GC), with a COA for every batch. Higher-purity or tighter-spec batches (assay, moisture, trace metals) can be custom produced against your target specification.
Q. Are physical property data available?
A. This CAS has limited published catalog data, so we do not quote literature boiling point or density values. Each batch is characterized in-house — boiling range, density, refractive index, GC purity and moisture — and the measured values are reported on the COA for your process design.
Q. How should it be stored and handled?
A. The Si–N bond hydrolyzes on contact with water or humid air, liberating flammable, pungent dimethylamine, and the material is classified flammable/corrosive. Store tightly sealed under dry nitrogen or argon in a cool, dry, dark place; transfer under inert atmosphere; use fume extraction and PPE. Full guidance is in the SDS.
Q. What packaging options are available?
A. Standard packaging is fluoride bottles, fluorinated / iron / plastic drums or IBC tanks according to order quantity, sealed dry under inert conditions before dispatch. Small sealed sample bottles are available for evaluation; cylinders, ampoules or custom-fitted packaging can be arranged on request.
Q. Are COA, SDS and DG documents provided? How is it shipped?
A. Yes — each batch ships with COA and SDS; TDS and regulatory documents are available on request. As a flammable, corrosive, water-reactive aminosilane, it is shipped through certified dangerous-goods channels by air, sea or courier, door to door, with complete DG documentation for customs clearance.
Q. Can I get a sample, custom specification or small-batch supply?
A. Yes. We support gram-scale samples for evaluation, custom purity/specification batches, and scale-up to production volumes. Related phenyl aminosilanes (e.g., bis- and tris-dimethylamino phenyl silanes) are also available for your screening. Application Cases:
Case 1 — Selective Alcohol Protection in API Synthesis
A pharmaceutical team uses PhMe₂SiNMe₂ to install a dimethylphenylsilyl group on a primary alcohol, providing a protecting group that survives downstream coupling steps where TMS proved too labile. The phenyl group also aids UV tracking of the intermediate by HPLC.
Case 2 — Phenyl Silicone Oil / Resin Intermediate
A silicone manufacturer incorporates the reagent into phenyl-methyl silicone oil development. Hydrolysis/condensation of the Si–N group introduces phenyl-dimethylsilyl segments, raising refractive index and thermal stability for optical and high-temperature silicone applications.
Case 3 — Hydrophobic, High-Index Silica Surface Treatment
An optics/materials lab grafts PhMe₂Si– groups onto hydroxylated fused-silica surfaces. The resulting phenylsilylated surface is hydrophobic and shows a higher refractive-index modification than trimethylsilyl treatment, useful in anti-fog and optical-coating research.
Case 4 — Aryne / Silylaniline Organic Synthesis
An organic chemistry research group employs the reagent as a dimethylsilylamine partner in aryne chemistry, enabling silylative amination routes to ortho-silylated aniline intermediates under metal-free conditions, with dimethylamine as a clean leaving fragment.
Case 5 — Si–N Dehydrocoupling & Specialty Polysilazane Studies
An academic polymer group uses PhMe₂SiNMe₂ as a model monofunctional Si–N compound in dehydrocoupling/catalysis studies and as an end-capper for phenyl-modified polysilazane chains, controlling molecular weight while introducing aromatic side groups for improved char yield.
