General Description of Pyromellitic Dianhydride

Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) CAS NO.: 89-32-7 is a white or slightly yellow crystal in pure form. When exposed to humid air, it will quickly absorb moisture in the air and hydrolyze into pyromellitic acid. It is soluble in organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, acetone, and insoluble in ether, chloroform, and benzene. It is mainly used as a raw material for polyimide, used to make curing matting agents for epoxy resins and cross-linking agents for polyester resins.

This product is white or slightly yellow crystals, with a melting point of 284-288℃, a boiling point of 397-400℃, a flash point of 380℃, and a specific gravity of 1.680. It is soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and ethyl acetate, but insoluble in chloroform, ether, and benzene. When exposed to humid air, it will quickly absorb moisture in the air and hydrolyze into pyromellitic acid. It is highly toxic and can irritate the skin and mucous membranes.

Main Applications

PMDA is mainly used as a raw material for polyimide, a curing matting agent for epoxy resin and a crosslinking agent for polyester resin.

Used to manufacture polyimide film, polyimide resin, powder coating matting agent, and advanced electrical insulation materials.

Used to make polyimide resin, high-temperature resistant electrical insulation paint, PVC plasticizer, synthetic resin crosslinking agent and epoxy resin curing agent, and also used to make phthalocyanine blue dye, etc.

PMDA is used as a curing agent for epoxy resin adhesives, with a reference dosage of 56 parts and a curing condition of 180℃/5~15min. Curing at 220℃/10h, the glass transition temperature Tg reaches 300℃. Due to its high melting point, it is difficult to mix with epoxy resin. It can be dissolved in phthalic anhydride or maleic anhydride, and is often mixed with these anhydrides as a curing agent.

Curing conditions are 135℃/2h or 165℃/lh. The cured product has excellent heat resistance and physical and mechanical properties, and the heat deformation temperature can reach 200~250℃.

In addition to the above miscibility method, PMDA can also be dissolved in acetone first and then mixed with epoxy resin, or PMDA can be crushed and dispersed in epoxy resin and cured at high temperature. PMDA can also be used as a modifier and mixed with other anhydrides to improve heat resistance and chemical resistance.
