Application

1. Cyclic silazane & Si–C–Si polymer building block: The methylene (–CH₂–) bridge between two dimethylaminosilyl groups makes it a defined spacer for synthesizing cyclic silazanes and silicon–carbon-backbone (carbosilane/silazane) polymers with controlled Si–C–Si spacing.
2. Dual-ended silylating / coupling reagent: Both Si–N ends silylate alcohols, silanols and surface hydroxyls, releasing only dimethylamine — useful for chain extension, cross-linking and surface bridging with a short, flexible methylene linker.
3. Specialty organosilicon intermediate: Starting material for methylene-bridged siloxanes/silazanes, Si–C ligands and custom organosilicon synthesis.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is 1,1′-methylenebis(N,N,1,1-tetramethylsilanamine)?

It is a methylene-bridged bis-aminosilane with the linear formula (CH₃)₂N–Si(CH₃)₂–CH₂–Si(CH₃)₂–N(CH₃)₂ (CAS 86053-30-7, molecular formula C₉H₂₆N₂Si₂, MW 218.49). Two dimethylaminodimethylsilyl groups are linked by a single methylene (–CH₂–) bridge, giving a bifunctional molecule with a short, flexible Si–C–Si spacer.

Is it a tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) or ethylenediamine derivative?

No. Despite informal descriptions, the CAS-registered structure contains no N–C–N ethylenediamine unit: the two silicon atoms are joined through a methylene bridge (–CH₂–), and each silicon bears one dimethylamino group. If your target is an ethylene-bridged analog, 1,2-bis[(dimethylamino)dimethylsilyl]ethane is a different compound (CAS 91166-50-6, C₁₀H₂₈N₂Si₂). Always confirm by CAS/structure.

What is this product mainly used for?

It is mainly used as a methylene-bridged building block for cyclic silazanes and silicon–carbon-backbone (carbosilane/silazane) polymers, as a dual-ended silylating/coupling reagent (two Si–N ends, dimethylamine as the only by-product), and as an intermediate for methylene-bridged siloxanes, Si–C ligands and custom organosilicon synthesis.

How does a methylene (–CH₂–) bridge differ from Si–O–Si or Si–Si linkages?

The –CH₂– bridge introduces a Si–C–Si segment that is fully hydrolytically stable (unlike Si–N, and flexible unlike rigid aromatics): it does not cleave under hydrolysis or acid/base conditions that attack Si–O–Si bonds. Polymers built from this reagent combine silicone-like flexibility with the chemical robustness of carbon-backbone linkages, and the methylene spacer keeps the two reactive ends at a defined short distance.

What purity do you supply?

Our standard grade is 95% min (by GC), with a COA for every batch. Higher-purity or tighter-spec batches (assay, moisture, trace metals) can be custom produced against your target specification.

What are the key physical properties?

Boiling point 76–77 °C at 3 Torr (vacuum range); predicted density about 0.83 g/mL. It is a volatile, flammable, moisture-sensitive liquid; batch-specific measured values are reported on the COA and full hazard data are in the SDS.

How should it be stored and handled?

Both Si–N bonds hydrolyze on contact with water or humid air, liberating flammable, pungent dimethylamine (the methylene bridge itself is stable). Store tightly sealed under dry nitrogen or argon in a cool, dry, dark place; transfer under inert atmosphere; use fume extraction and PPE. Full guidance is in the SDS.

What packaging options are available?

Standard packaging is fluoride bottles, fluorinated / iron / plastic drums or IBC tanks according to order quantity, sealed dry under inert conditions before dispatch. Small sealed sample bottles are available for evaluation; cylinders, ampoules or custom-fitted packaging can be arranged on request.

Are COA, SDS and DG documents provided? How is it shipped?

Yes — each batch ships with COA and SDS; TDS and regulatory documents are available on request. As a flammable, corrosive, water-reactive aminosilane, it is shipped through certified dangerous-goods channels by air, sea or courier, door to door, with complete DG documentation for customs clearance.

Can I get a sample, custom specification or small-batch supply?

Yes. We support gram-scale samples for evaluation, custom purity/specification batches and scale-up to production volumes. Related bridged aminosilanes — including the ethylene-bridged analog (CAS 91166-50-6) and other spacer structures — can be quoted on request. Application Cases:

Case 1 — Cyclic Silazane Monomer Synthesis

An organosilicon R&D group uses the methylene-bridged bis-aminosilane to construct defined cyclic silazane structures. Intramolecular cyclization via the two Si–N ends with a short –CH₂– spacer yields small-ring Si–N heterocycles used as model compounds and polymer intermediates.

Case 2 — Si–C Backbone (Carbosilane/Carbosilazane) Polymer

A specialty polymer team builds carbosilazane chains where hydrolytically stable Si–CH₂–Si segments alternate with Si–N condensation sites. The resulting polymers retain silicone-like flexibility while gaining carbon-backbone chemical resistance, evaluated for coatings and ceramic-precursor research.

Case 3 — Dual-Ended Silanol Chain Extension

A silicone formulator uses the reagent as a chain extender for silanol-terminated oils. Both ends react with silanol groups, joining chains through a flexible methylene-bridged unit with dimethylamine as the only by-product, controlling molecular weight build without metal catalysts.

Case 4 — Methylene-Bridged Surface Modification

A materials lab grafts the reagent onto hydroxylated oxide surfaces to install short Si–CH₂–Si bridges with residual dimethylamino functionality, creating stable, hydrophobic anchor sites for subsequent functional layer attachment.

Case 5 — Custom Si–C Ligand & Intermediate Supply

A fine-chemical customer orders documented batches as a starting material for methylene-bridged Si–C ligands and functional silanes: the two dimethylamino groups serve as clean substitution handles for sequential derivatization into proprietary organosilicon compounds.
